Join Us October 9

John Parker Historical Society Celebration Oct. 9, 2016

The John P. Parker Historical Society, Inc. will celebrate their 20 year
Anniversary at the Parker House Museum located at 300 N. Front Street in Ripley,
Ohio on Sunday, October 9, 2016 from 2-4 p.m.

Join us in the celebration of this milestone. On that afternoon, special music will be provided by local choirs in  honor of the integral part music played in the Parker home. Free tours will be

offered and light refreshments will be served for your enjoyment!
Come join in the  fellowship.

John P. Parker History Camp

June 6-9, 2016

The John P. Parker History Camp will be offered on site to teach Brown Country Elementary students about the important role that Ripley, Ohio played in the abolitionist movement in the 1800’s.

Day 1- Introduction to John P.Parker and the Underground Railroad. Students will participate in the National Parks Service Junior Ranger Activity Book.

Day 2- Craft: Students will  create a friendship quilt. They will use felt squares to create their portrait and the squares will be tied together to form a special quilt of friendship.

Day 3-Play: Students will participate in an outdoor play in out amphitheater “Big Words , Strong Words” by Bobbi Katz

Day 4 – Visit to the Ripley Museum and explore the UGRR exhibits

Admission is free.

Class size will be limited to 18 students, who will have completed the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.

May 1- Seasons opens! Friday, Saturday from 10 to 5 PM and Sunday 1 to 5 PM.

June 4 Parker House Tag Sale-Think of items to donate.

June-John P. Parker History Camp- for grades 3, 4, and 5.

JulyNew Signage in the Parker Park and new audio equipment in the Parker Museum.

October 31Season ends.

December 1 Holiday Forest of Lights Program at 7 PM.

Parker House Events – 2015!

The John P. Parker Historical Society will be featuring several events at the Parker House at 300 N. Front Street in Ripley, Ohio during the month of April.

  • O Sunday, April 19 at 2.p.m. the public is invited to hear Ann Hagedorn, acclaimed author, speak on John Parker’s life entitled “John Parker Then and Now.” Ann has agreed to have a book signing after the talk. Light refreshments will be served.
  •  April 24 & 25 the Parker House will be open from 10-5 to the general public and persons who are taking part in the Geo Freedom Trail. The Geo Freedom Trail has been organized by AFK Geocaching. The trail will have caching points located in Hamilton Co., Clermont Co. and Brown County. There will be 18 caching points on the Geo Freedom Trail. The John Parker House will be one of the points on the trail as well as the Rankin House in Ripley. The other points in Brown Co. will be in Georgetown at the Grant Statue, the Grant Boyhood Home and Grant School House. This is the first time that the Parker House has taken part in a geo caching event. Search the website afkgeocaching.com to take part in or just find out more about the event.
  • Friday May 1 the Parker House Museum will officially open for the 2015 season.
    • The Parker House is open May through October each Friday & Saturday from 10 to 5 p.m. and on each Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
    • The Parker House is open all other days by appointment.

The Parker House has displays featuring the life of John Parker. John Parker was born a slave, bought his own freedom, was an abolitionist, an inventor, entrepreneur and a true American hero.

The Parker House at 300 N. Front Street in Ripley invites you to come visit this National Historic Landmark.

Renactment Program at the Parker Park: October 11!

 

Join 20 costumed actors in Ripley for this re-enactment event to be put on in the Parker Park on Saturday, October 11 at 2 p.m.

The program is called “Faces of Freedom: Preserving the Stories of the Underground Railroad.” Admission is $10 and  is by reservation.

Parker House May Become Part of the National Park System

On  7-15-14 Senator Sherrod Brown introduced Senate Bill #S. 2610 to direct the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a special resource study to determine the suitability & feasibility of establishing the John P. Parker House in Ripley, Ohio as a unit of the National Park System. Congresswoman Beatty will introduce a companion bill in the House of Representatives and Congresswoman Fudge will co-sponsor that bill.
